Suspect Arrested After Shots Fired at UC Berkeley's Lower Sproul Plaza

Shots were fired at Lower Sproul Plaza on the UC Berkeley campus around 8:40 p.m.

The incident triggered a WarnMe notification sent at 9:20 p.m., categorizing it as an “aggravated assault.”

One person is in custody.

Police cordoned off Bancroft Way at College Avenue and conducted a search for additional suspects.

A shelter-in-place order was promptly issued and lasted until 9:52 p.m.

The area has been secured, and there were no reported injuries, according to UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof.

Eyewitnesses observed at least one individual handcuffed near the scene.

A video from a nearby student captured an individual firing shots into the air on Lower Sproul Plaza.

Approximately 100 students sought shelter in the RSF (Recreational Sports Facility) nearby.

Unit 3 students and audience members at a Cal Performances event at Zellerbach Hall continued to shelter in place.

Shots were first heard at 8:40 p.m., but the WarnMe notification was sent at 9:20 p.m.

UC Berkeley had recently emphasized emergency preparedness, including signing up for WarnMe text alerts. However, these alerts were not sent for this incident.

Students received an email notification 30 minutes after the shots were first reported, indicating a delay in informing the campus community.
